This week I prepared for and attended the Frisco ISD ISM Symposium.
I worked on practicing interviews with my classmates, and ways to improve my speaking skills. One classmate would pretend to be a professional in our field of interest and ask questions. The other classmate would then try to answer the questions to the best of their ability without freezing or saying phrases like "I don't know". This practice allowed me and the rest of the class to feel more confident about answering interview questions and helped us develop more well-thought-out responses. It also helped me not have to use words such as "umm" to collect my thoughts because I would already have a reply prepared to a variety of questions posed by the interviewer.
Once we got to the symposium, we went through several workshops that taught us great skills for finding mentors for ISM, and what will help us create our original work for the ISM program. There were also panels of business professionals who explained what joining the workforce was like for them, and they gave us advice that they would have liked to receive at our age. At the end of the symposium, I met with two separate interviewers who asked me a series of questions about myself, but I also was able to ask them several questions about their work and why skills have allowed them to excel in their fields.
This experience with these two different interviewers allowed me the chance to practice talking to others with different personality types and learn how to maintain and expand on conversations with professionals.
